    Cordoama

Long, empty and cinematic — Castelejo's northern neighbour.

Praia da Cordoama is a vast stretch of dark sand below towering schist cliffs on the Costa Vicentina, a few minutes north of Castelejo. At low tide the two beaches join into one enormous sweep of sand, and even in August you can walk for ten minutes without meeting anyone.

Lagos is the ideal base for exploring the entire coastline.

    Highlights

    • Huge open beach beneath dramatic dark cliffs
    • Connects to Castelejo on foot at low tide
    • Clifftop viewpoint with one of the best views on the west coast
    • Consistent Atlantic surf and space to spread out

    Best for

    • Surfers
    • Photographers
    • Long walks
    • Sunset watchers

    How to get there

By car: from Lagos, take the N125 to Vila do Bispo — about 35 minutes — then follow the signposted road west for 10 minutes to the beach car park above the sand. By bus: Vamus services from Lagos stop at Vila do Bispo in around 50 minutes; from there it is 5 km to the beach, so a taxi or a long walk is needed for the last stretch. By bicycle: roughly 35 km from Lagos with a final exposed descent — a strong half-day ride each way. On foot: the clifftop path from Castelejo reaches Cordoama in about 30 minutes, with the viewpoint road above offering the widest panorama.

    The beach and the cliffs

Cordoama's scale is the point: dark sand, high cliffs and open Atlantic. The clifftop viewpoint above the car park is worth the short drive on its own, especially in late afternoon light.

    Practical notes

There is a seasonal beach kiosk but little else — bring water and shade. Currents are strong and there is often shore break, so swimming is for confident swimmers on calm days only.

    Good to know

Can I walk between Cordoama and Castelejo?

Yes — at low tide you can walk along the sand, and the clifftop path connects the two beaches in about 30 minutes at any tide.

    Is the water calm here?

Usually not. Cordoama faces the full Atlantic, with shore break and rip currents. Come for the landscape and the surf; for calm swimming, stay on the south coast.

    Are there facilities?

A seasonal kiosk operates in summer. Otherwise there is no shade, no shop and no lifeguard outside the main season.
