Carrapateira
A small village between two of the West Coast's finest beaches.
Carrapateira is a low, whitewashed village on the Costa Vicentina, sitting between Praia da Bordeira to the north and Praia do Amado to the south. It is the natural base for a day on the wild west coast: a handful of cafés and surf schools, a small museum of the sea, and a circular road that leads out to some of the best clifftop viewpoints in the Algarve.
Lagos is the ideal base for exploring the entire coastline.

How to get there
By car: from Lagos, take the N120 north to Aljezur, then the N268 south towards Vila do Bispo — about 55–65 minutes in total. By local bus: Vamus services run between Lagos, Aljezur and Carrapateira, but departures are limited and best checked the day before; allow around 1.5 hours. By bicycle: only for experienced riders — roughly 45 km each way from Lagos with long climbs and exposed wind. On foot: the Rota Vicentina's Fishermen's Trail passes through Carrapateira, linking Bordeira and Amado in a scenic 6–7 km stage of clifftop and dune walking.
The village
Carrapateira is small enough to cross on foot in ten minutes. The Museu do Mar e da Terra explains how the community lived between farming and fishing, and it is a useful stop before heading out to the cliffs.
The clifftop circuit
The Pontal da Carrapateira loop is a short, signposted drive or walk out to the headland between the two beaches, with parking bays at several viewpoints. Sunset here is one of the best on the coast.

- Can I reach Carrapateira without a car?
It is possible but limited — buses connect Lagos and Aljezur to Carrapateira, though services are infrequent. If you are relying on public transport, check timetables in advance and plan a full day rather than a quick trip.
- Can I walk between Bordeira and Amado from the village?
Yes. A signposted stage of the Fishermen's Trail links the two beaches via the Pontal headland — around 6–7 km with dunes, boardwalks and clifftop paths, taking about two hours at a relaxed pace.
- Is Carrapateira worth it if I don't surf?
Absolutely. The landscape, the clifftop viewpoints and the walking are the main draw. The surf simply adds atmosphere to the village.
