Bordeira
A vast, wind-swept beach of dunes and a river mouth.
Praia da Bordeira is one of the largest and wildest beaches on the Costa Vicentina — a huge expanse of sand backed by dunes, with a shallow river winding across it to meet the Atlantic. At low tide the beach seems endless; at high tide the sea reclaims most of it. It is a landscape beach rather than a resort beach.
Lagos is the ideal base for exploring the entire coastline.

How to get there
By car: from Lagos, take the N120 to Aljezur then the N268 towards Carrapateira, following signs to Praia da Bordeira — about 60–70 minutes, with a free car park above the dunes. By local bus: take a Vamus service to Carrapateira and walk the final 2 km down the valley road to the beach, roughly 25 minutes. By bicycle: the last stretch from Carrapateira is easy and flat, though the ride from Lagos itself is long and exposed. On foot: the Fishermen's Trail crosses the dunes here, linking Bordeira with Carrapateira and Praia do Amado in one continuous coastal walk.
The beach and the river
The river that crosses the sand forms shallow, warm pools well away from the surf, which makes Bordeira surprisingly practical for families even though the ocean itself is powerful. The dunes behind are protected — stick to the boardwalks.
Conditions
Bordeira is fully exposed to the Atlantic and to the summer nortada wind. Bring a windbreak, and expect cooler water and stronger currents than anywhere on the south coast.

- Is Bordeira safe for swimming?
The open ocean here has strong currents and shore break, so it suits confident swimmers and surfers only. The shallow river channel across the sand is a much safer option for children.
- Are there facilities at the beach?
There is a large car park, boardwalk access and a seasonal café near the entrance, but far fewer services than on the south-coast beaches. Bring water, food and shade.
- How long should I allow for a visit?
Plan a half-day at least. The drive is around an hour each way, and the beach is best combined with Carrapateira village or Praia do Amado.
