Castelejo
Dark sand, towering cliffs and serious Atlantic swell.
Praia do Castelejo is the closest of the great west-coast beaches to Lagos and one of the most striking: dark, almost slate-coloured sand at the foot of high schist cliffs, with the Atlantic arriving in full force. It is reached by a winding road up and over the hills from Vila do Bispo, and the drive itself is part of the experience.
Lagos is the ideal base for exploring the entire coastline.

How to get there
By car: from Lagos, follow the N125 west to Vila do Bispo (about 35 minutes), then take the signposted road over the hills to Castelejo — roughly 10 minutes more, with a car park at the end. By local bus: take a Lagos–Sagres bus to Vila do Bispo, then a taxi for the final 5 km, as no bus serves the beach itself. By bicycle: the climb out of Vila do Bispo is short but steep, and rewarding on the descent back. On foot: a clifftop track connects Castelejo to Cordoama in around 40 minutes of walking, with big views the whole way.
The setting
The cliffs at Castelejo are among the highest on this stretch of coast, and the dark sand makes the whole beach feel more elemental than the golden coves further east. It is a landscape that photographs beautifully in late light.
Combining it with Cordoama
A dirt road along the clifftop links Castelejo to Cordoama and, further on, Barriga. Many visitors park at one and walk to the other, returning along the same track.

- Do I need a car to reach Castelejo?
Effectively yes. Buses reach Vila do Bispo but not the beach, so the final 5 km needs a car, taxi or bicycle.
- Is Castelejo good for swimming?
Only for strong swimmers on calm days. The Atlantic here is powerful with regular rip currents — most visitors come for the surf, the walk and the scenery.
- How far is Castelejo from Lagos?
About 45 minutes by car, which makes it the most accessible of the true west-coast beaches from the townhouse.
