Tonel is Sagres's west-facing beach, a short walk from the village and the fortress. Open to Atlantic swell and afternoon sun, it is the local surf beach — spectacular to look at, and better for riding waves than for gentle swimming.

How to get there
By car: from Lagos, the N125 and IC4/EN268 reach Sagres in about 45 minutes, with parking above the beach. By local bus: Vamus services from Lagos to Sagres take around an hour and stop in the village, a 10-minute walk from the sand. By bicycle: roughly 33 km from Lagos, mostly on the EN125 and EN268 — a half-day ride each way. On foot: from Sagres village it is a flat 10-minute walk, and the clifftop path from the fortress gives the best first view of the beach.
Surf and conditions
Tonel picks up almost every swell and works best at low to mid tide. Surf schools operate here through the season, and boards can be rented in the village. Swimmers should be careful: rip currents are common and the shore break can be heavy.
Practical notes
The walk down from the car park is short but steep in places. There is a seasonal café, and the village is close enough that lunch is never a problem. Bring a windbreak — the nortada can be strong in the afternoon.

Only with care. It is exposed to Atlantic swell with frequent rip currents, so it suits confident swimmers and surfers more than families. Beliche or Martinhal are calmer alternatives nearby.
