    Beliche

Between the two capes, protected from most wind.

Praia do Beliche sits on the road between Sagres and Cabo de São Vicente, tucked beneath tall ochre cliffs and reached by a long flight of steps. Sheltered from the prevailing north wind, it is often the calmest beach at the end of the Algarve.

Lagos is the ideal base for exploring the entire coastline.

    Highlights

    • Dramatic cliffs and a wide sandy beach
    • Sheltered when Tonel and the west coast are blown out
    • Steps down from the clifftop car park
    • Minutes from Cabo de São Vicente and its sunsets

    Best for

    • Surfers
    • Windy days
    • Sunset before the cape

    How to get there

By car: from Lagos, take the N125 and then the IC4/EN268 to Sagres — about 45 minutes — then follow the road towards Cabo de São Vicente for 3 km to the clifftop car park. By local bus: Vamus services run from Lagos to Sagres in around an hour; from the village it is a 3 km walk or short taxi ride to the beach. By bicycle: roughly 35 km from Lagos, a serious ride best done early, with a rewarding descent to the cape. On foot: from Sagres village, the clifftop road and tracks bring you to Beliche in about 40 minutes, and the path continues to Cabo de São Vicente.

Why it works on windy days

Beliche faces south-west and is backed by high cliffs, so when the summer nortada blows and Tonel is unusable, this beach often stays swimmable. It is the standard fallback for anyone spending the day around Sagres.

    Practical notes

Access is by a long staircase cut into the cliff, so it is not suitable for anyone with limited mobility. There is a small clifftop car park and a seasonal restaurant, but bring water regardless. Currents can be strong when the swell is up.

    Good to know

Is Beliche a good beach when it is windy?

Yes — the high cliffs shelter it from the prevailing north wind, so it is usually the calmest option around Sagres.

How do I get down to the beach?

By a long flight of steps from the clifftop car park. It is manageable for most people, but not step-free.

Can I combine Beliche with Cabo de São Vicente?

Easily. The cape is about 2 km further along the same road, making a beach afternoon and a sunset at the lighthouse a natural pairing.
