Sagres
Europe's south-western edge — wind, cliffs and Atlantic light.
Sagres is where the continent runs out. A small, weather-shaped town on the cape of the same name, it is quieter and more rugged than Lagos, with surf beaches on three sides and a horizon that feels endlessly open.
Lagos is the ideal base for exploring the entire coastline.

How to get there
By car: from Lagos, follow the N125 west and then the EN268 — around 35 minutes. By bus: Vamus/Rede Expressos services run daily between Lagos bus terminal and Sagres, taking roughly 60–75 minutes depending on stops; a comfortable option if you'd rather not drive. By bicycle: experienced cyclists ride the coastal route via Burgau, Salema and Raposeira — around 35 km each way, with real climbs and headwind, so best treated as a full day. On foot: the Fishermen's Trail (Rota Vicentina) reaches Sagres over several stages from the west coast — a serious multi-day walk rather than a day trip, though individual stages can be walked with a bus or taxi return.
The cape
Cabo de São Vicente was known as the end of the world before the Age of Discoveries. The cliffs drop 75 metres straight into the Atlantic, and the lighthouse at the tip is one of the most powerful in Europe.
Beaches around the town
Tonel faces west and takes the swell. Mareta is calmer and closer to the centre. Beliche, tucked between the two capes, is protected on most days.

- Is Sagres remote?
It feels remote — sparse population, exposed landscape, and a strong wind most of the year — but it is only 35 minutes from Lagos, which makes it an easy day trip rather than a place most travellers need to overnight.
- Do I need a car to visit Sagres?
No — daily buses connect Lagos to Sagres in around an hour, and the town centre, Mareta beach and the fortress are all walkable from the stop. A car is only really needed if you want to reach Cabo de São Vicente or several beaches in one day.
- How long should I spend in Sagres?
A full day works well: the fortress and Cabo de São Vicente in the morning, a beach or lunch in the afternoon, and sunset at the lighthouse before driving back to Lagos.
