    Burgau

A fishing village that never turned into a resort.

Burgau is a small fishing village tucked into a sheltered bay between Lagos and Sagres. Low white houses slope down to a calm beach, and the pace rarely rises above a stroll.

Lagos is the ideal base for exploring the entire coastline.

    Highlights

    • Sheltered sandy beach in the village centre
    • Walkable seafront and narrow village lanes
    • Beach Bar Burgau — a laid-back beach bar that has been a Burgau fixture for years
    • Quiet alternative to the larger Lagos beaches

    Best for

    • Beach days
    • Slow mornings
    • Sunset stops on the way back to Lagos

    How to get there

By car: from Lagos, follow the N125 west for about 15 minutes and drop down into the village — parking is limited near the beach in summer. By local bus: Vamus services between Lagos and Sagres or Salema stop at Burgau, taking around 25–30 minutes. By bicycle: the coastal road from Lagos via Praia da Luz is a scenic ride of roughly 12 km and 45 minutes, with a few short climbs. On foot: walkers can follow the clifftop path from Praia da Luz to Burgau — about 5 km along open coastline, 1.5 hours at a relaxed pace, with a bus or taxi back to Lagos.

    What to expect

Burgau rewards travellers who arrive early and stay unhurried. Facilities are limited compared to the main Lagos beaches, which is part of the appeal.

    Beach Bar Burgau

Right on the sand, Beach Bar Burgau has been the village's beach bar for years. It is a simple, friendly spot for a cold drink, a light lunch or an afternoon pause after a swim — very much part of the authentic Burgau routine.

    Practical notes

Bring water and shade — parking fills quickly in July and August. Most of these beaches have at least one simple restaurant nearby.

    Good to know

Can I get to Burgau without a car?

Yes — buses from Lagos towards Salema and Sagres stop at Burgau in around 25–30 minutes, and the village is compact enough to explore entirely on foot once you arrive.

Can I walk to Burgau from Praia da Luz?

Yes. The clifftop path between the two villages is about 5 km and takes roughly 1.5 hours, with open ocean views most of the way. Comfortable shoes and water are recommended in summer.

Is Beach Bar Burgau open all year?

Beach bars in small Algarve villages usually scale back in winter. In summer it is a reliable stop for drinks and light food right on the beach.
