Arrifana
Surf capital of the Costa Vicentina.
Arrifana is a dark-sand bay held between a headland and a wall of cliffs, with a small cluster of restaurants on the clifftop above. It is the best-known surf beach north of Sagres — a natural amphitheatre that catches swell most of the year and turns golden at sunset.
Lagos is the ideal base for exploring the entire coastline.

How to get there
By car: from Lagos, take the N120 north to Aljezur — about 45 minutes — then follow signs west for 15 minutes to the clifftop, where a steep road drops to the beach car park. By bus: Vamus/Rede Expressos reach Aljezur from Lagos in around an hour; from there Arrifana is a short taxi ride or a 10 km walk. By bicycle: roughly 48 km from Lagos, a demanding full-day ride with a steep final descent and climb. On foot: the Fishermen's Trail runs along the clifftops here, linking Arrifana with Monte Clérigo to the north — one of the finest stages of the whole route.
Surf and the bay
Arrifana's right-hand point break draws surfers year-round, and several schools run lessons on the sheltered inside section. The headland shelters the northern end, so beginners and swimmers usually find calmer water there than anywhere else on this coast.
Above the beach
The clifftop village has a handful of restaurants looking straight down into the bay, and the ruined fortress on the point is a five-minute walk for the best view. Most travellers combine Arrifana with one other west-coast beach and stop in Aljezur for lunch at Restaurante Cal and a coffee at Koyo Roasters before driving back to Lagos.

- Is Arrifana good for beginner surfers?
Yes — the sheltered northern end of the bay is where the surf schools teach, while the point break on the outside is for experienced surfers.
- Is the water calm here?
Calmer than most of the Costa Vicentina thanks to the headland, but it is still open Atlantic with currents. Swim near the sheltered end and check conditions.
- Do I need a car to visit Arrifana?
It helps. Buses reach Aljezur from Lagos, but the last 10 km to the beach need a taxi, a bike or a long walk.
