    Amoreira

River meets ocean — one of the most beautiful stretches on the coast.

Praia da Amoreira is where the Aljezur river meets the Atlantic, creating a shallow lagoon behind the dunes and a vast beach in front of them. Children paddle in the warm river channel while surfers work the ocean side — a rare combination on this coast.

Lagos is the ideal base for exploring the entire coastline.

    Highlights

    • Shallow, warmer river lagoon safe for paddling
    • Wide dune-backed Atlantic beach
    • Clifftop walk to a panoramic viewpoint
    • Ten minutes from Aljezur

    How to get there

By car: from Lagos, follow the N120 north to Aljezur — around 45 minutes — then take the signposted road west for 10 minutes to the large car park by the river. By bus: services from Lagos reach Aljezur in about an hour; the beach is a short taxi ride or a 7 km walk from town. By bicycle: roughly 43 km from Lagos on the N120 and a quiet valley road along the river — the final stretch is flat and scenic. On foot: the Fishermen's Trail passes above Amoreira, connecting it with Monte Clérigo to the south and Odeceixe to the north.

    The river and the ocean

The river channel is shallow, calm and noticeably warmer than the Atlantic, which makes Amoreira unusually workable for families on a coast better known for its swell. Cross the dunes and you are on open ocean beach.

    Practical notes

There is a restaurant near the car park and a lifeguard in the main season on the ocean side. The clifftop path north of the river climbs to a viewpoint over the estuary — 20 minutes, and the best photograph of the day.

    Good to know

    Is Amoreira safe for children?

The river lagoon behind the dunes is shallow and calm, which suits younger children. The ocean side is exposed Atlantic and needs the usual caution.

    Are there facilities?

Yes — a car park, a restaurant near the beach and seasonal lifeguard cover on the ocean side.

Can I combine Amoreira with other beaches?

Easily. Monte Clérigo is ten minutes away and Arrifana around twenty, with Aljezur — and a coffee at Koyo Roasters — in between.
